The Walter family, owners of Lore’s Chocolates, began their chocolate journey in 1960 when Tony Walter Sr. entered the chocolate industry with Minter Brothers Confections in Bridgeport Pennsylvania. After 6 years, Tony Sr. joined Plantation Candies, a full line confectioner located at Janny St. and Allegheny Ave. in Philadelphia. In 1972 the Walter family moved to Baton Rouge La. after Tony Sr. accepted a position with Elmer Candy Company of Ponchatoula. Just in time for the Bicentennial, the Walters find their way back to Philadelphia when The Goldenberg Peanut Chew Company hires a new plant manager, Tony Sr.
Fast-forward to 1986 - Midge, Tony Sr. and Tony Jr. purchase Lore’s Chocolates, and the candy making tradition lives on. Ten years later, in order to increase capacity and better serve their customers, the Walters purchase a building on Wyoming Ave., which just so happens to be the original site of the Goldenberg Peanut Chew factory. Today, Lore’s Chocolates manufactures the majority of their products at the Wyoming Avenue factory location, and seasonal items are made at the center city factory/store.
